Some Essential Gardening Equipment Every Gardener Must Have
Gardening is a hobby, which involves many tasks. For some who has turned this hobby into a source of income, the use of gardening equipment is necessary. The kind of equipment that you use depends on the size of your garden. If you have a big garden, you will need several pieces of equipment to get things done more quickly.
With the advent of technology, gardening equipment nowadays have become more advanced and adaptive to the needs of the changing times. Although not all gardeners can afford to have those high-tech gardening tools available in the market, there are at least some basic tools that every gardener must have.
Most of these are hand tools, which are used for cultivating like rakes, shovels, trowels, spading forks, and diggers. The list can still go on, but these are only basic tools that can help you prepare your garden plot for planting.

Pruning tools are also essential gardening equipment especially if you have shrubs and small trees in your garden. For thinner branches of about 3/4 inch diameter, the pruning shears can be used and for branches of about 2 inches in diameter, the lopping shears is perfect.
If you have tall trees in your backyard, the pole pruners are used to cut branches as high as 15 feet from the ground. Heavy-duty pruning tools are the pruning saws and hedge shears.
Since one of the basic and most important needs for a plant to survive is water, you will also need equipment to provide water to your plants. The water hose is the most common gardening devices especially for large gardens. If you have only a small size garden, the sprinklers will do.
Gardening equipment is important in managing a garden. Even if some gardeners would claim that they enjoy gardening more doing the dirty jobs by themselves, they still need basic tools. If you were making money out of your garden, investing in gardening equipment would be worth it.

Battery Powered Chainsaws
Battery powered chainsaws are fairly rare in the United States, but if you are interested in a battery powered chainsaw you can find them. It may take some digging to do. There is one brand currently being offered that claims a single chain blade can cut 4,000 pieces of PVC pipe with only a small amount of oil required.
This saw has a chain tip guard to prevent kickback and extend chain life. The electric brake stops within ½ second of releasing the trigger. It also has hand guards. A hex wrench allows for rapid blade changes and adjustments.
The chain guard allows fast entry to the blade and motor housing area. The 12 V.N1-MH battery gives you a longer operating time. You can buy an optional handle if you will need a longer reach. This 4.6 pound dynamo cuts through a variety of PVC piping diameters.
We found two other brands of battery powered chainsaws. One made in China has a 12 volt battery and a shock absorption system. The other brand has an 18 volt battery and a 10 inch chain. There is little information currently available on these saws and most of what is available is anecdotal.
On one message board we found a discussion thread on cordless battery operated chainsaws. One participant said he made 12 cuts and took down a five inch sugar maple.
Another said he got one and it wouldn't cut a two inch twig - he had the chain on backwards. Overall it looks like the ideal chainsaw for the occasional user who wants to do some light pruning or to take down small trees.

Does the Average Home Owner Need a Pole Saw?
I was recently asked the question "Should I buy a Pole Saw", and it is my hope to answer that question not only for the person who asked it, but for anyone else wondering if a pole saw is necessary for their households.
A pole saw is a small, generally 12 inch saw connected to an extending pole. It's purpose is to cut small branches, generally for pruning, and general shaping of a tree. This saw is not to be confused with a regular chainsaw and will not replace your chainsaw for after storm clean up or clearing large branches.
Generally the poles for these saws vary between 8 and fourteen feet. This allows for about a maximum of a 20 foot reach. These saws will easily cut branches up to 12 inches in diameter, and are great for this purpose. However, you may quickly become tired pruning higher branches. These saws may seem very light at ground level, but holding them up to cut the branches, they quickly become quite heavy. If you have some light pruning to do these will work well.
The downside is these saws generally run at least 500$ a piece, which can be excessive for your average home owner. However, if you are looking to do light duty pruning, and are only planning to use your pole saw occasionally you can also look at a smaller saw. You may even be tempted to purchase an electric model, instead of a gas run model. This may be a good choice if you are not planning to use it regularly, as gas engines do take a bit of maintenance, even when not in use to keep them running well.
If you have a home where you are going to need to be pruning trees often you may find this tool helpful, especially if you have tall trees. It will make pruning much easier than trying to stand on a ladder. It will also be much safer too.
However, if you will only have a small amount of pruning to do, and can't really justify the expenditure for such a tool, I suggest you call around to your local rental store. You can often rent this type of saw for around 20 dollars a day. If you are only going to need it a couple times of year this will save you in the long run, as you will not have to worry about sharpening the chain, handling the maintenance or repairing it when it breaks down.
Just remember, no matter what type of chainsaw you are using, the key to safe and effective cutting is a sharp chain. Whether you sharpen the chain yourself or take it to a professional to have it done, you must cut with a sharp chain. This will decrease your chances of accidents and injuries.
